Custom rotary position sensor designed for a throttle pedal installation on a race car. The sensor uses the core electronics of the Dual Output Quantum 360 position sensor, with a customised body suited to the existing mounting footprint of the pedal assembly.

Description

The brief

A race team approached us to design a dual redundant pedal position sensor for a race car. The sensor needed to monitor up to 40 degrees of angular throttle pedal movement. It also needed to be light and provide accurate data.

They specified that the sensor should be IP67 ingress protection rated and be able to withstand significant vibration. It also required dual redundant outputs to satisfy governing body safety regulations.

Reventec has developed an enviable reputation for developing sensors used by top-flight motorsport teams, so we understand the challenges our customers face. As a result, we were briefed to design and produce a reliable, dual redundant pedal position sensor.

The project

The throttle pedal position sensor had to operate reliably in the extreme environment of motor racing. Reventec position sensors use the latest TMR non-contact sensing technology, so our sensors don’t suffer from the same physical wear characteristics of potentiometers or other legacy technologies. This is important when you consider that some endurance car race teams experience potentiometer sensor failures more than once, during a single race. Not ideal if you’re trying to win a championship.

We designed, built and calibrated the throttle position sensor at our Wiltshire, UK premises.
