Description

The brief

A leading motorsports team approached us to design and build a suspension rocker position sensor. The sensor needed to monitor 45 degree arc movement in an endurance race car rear suspension rocker. The brief was to design and produce a reliable sensor to replace a rotary potentiometer that was failing regularly. This was a frequent problem, often occurring once or more during a long endurance race. We were given three weeks to design and produce a fully-functional solution.

The project

This suspension rocker position sensor needed to be able to operate reliably in the high temperatures and high-vibration environment found in endurance racing. Reventec has an enviable history developing sensors for use in top-flight motorsports, so we have a good understand of the environmental challenges.

The rocker position sensor needed to be a direct drop-in replacement for a troublesome potentiometer. It needed to make accurate measurements under high vibration. All Reventec position sensors use the latest TMR, non-contact sensing technology, which means they don’t suffer from the same physical wear characteristics of potentiometers and other legacy technologies.

At the point of writing, the sensor has been performing perfectly for more than a year with no failures reported.
